History
Montreal's first public golf course opened as nine holes on August 10, 1923, beside Parc Maisonneuve. Albert Murray laid it out. It grew to 18 holes by 1926, 27 in 1953 and 36 in 1962, adding land east of rue Viau, and it hosted the 1967 Canadian Open (won by Billy Casper) and the 1973 La Canadienne, won by Jocelyne Bourassa. The Viau section was closed in 1973 for the Olympic Village and the Maisonneuve section after the 1975 season and turned into park land, leaving a scaled-down nine-hole municipal course with a driving range.
