History

The Bigwin Inn resort's golf course on Bigwin Island in Lake of Bays opened in 1922 as a nine-hole Stanley Thompson design. It grew in stages to 12, then 14, then 18 holes by 1930, but stayed short at under 5,000 yards. It closed along with the declining resort in the late 1960s (Doug Carrick gives 1968) and became overgrown. Today the site is part of Doug Carrick's Bigwin Island Golf Club, which opened in 2001–02; a few of its holes sit in the old fairway openings, but most of the new course runs through land outside the original layout.
