History

Founded as the Mayfair Golf and Country Club on land leased from the City of Edmonton in the North Saskatchewan River valley, the club opened a nine-hole course by J. Munro Hunter on May 27, 1922. Stanley Thompson renovated it so heavily in 1927 that he is often credited as its designer, and Les Furber carried out a major renovation starting in 1988. Queen Elizabeth II gave the club the "Royal" title in 2005, and it has hosted the 1946 Canadian Amateur, the 1958 Canadian Open, and the Canadian Women's Open in 2007 and 2013.
